Description

Hericium erinaceus is the Latin name for one of the most valued culinary mushrooms in Japan and China. With a protein content of about 22% and a wide range of minerals and ergosterol, it represents a nutrient-dense food source.

For hundreds of years the mushroom we know as Lion’s Mane (Yamabushitake in Japanese) was consumed as part of the versatile Asian diet. Over time people noticed that stews and soups made with the mushroom – essentially mushroom extracts – helped to alleviate pain from gastric/stomach issues.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history of using Lion’s Mane to treat ulcers and gastritis, maintain digestive health, fortify the spleen and protect the liver. Practitioners of TCM also administer the mushroom as an anticancer drug, especially for gastric and oesophageal cancer.

Rich in the powerful 1,3-1,6 beta-D-glucans, known for their role in supporting optimum immune function, balancing blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol, Hericium erinaceus is also a source of other secondary compounds.

Two of the most known actives are hericenones and erinacines. Having low molecular weight, they are able to pass the blood-brain barrier and potentiate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF). In short, NGF is a protein that helps repair neurons and reduces inflammatory processes in both the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Scientists have linked low levels of NGF to cognitive decline and motor deficits, but NGF is also involved in, for example, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and depression.

A general rule for a good-quality mushroom extract is good-quality mushroom material. We use organically cultivated, hand-picked Lion’s Mane fruiting bodies, which are then extracted to produce our completely natural, nutrient-dense mushroom extract powder. Our extract is guaranteed to be free from fillers like starch and grain and additives of any kind. What you get is 100% pure Lion’s Mane mushroom extract. According to WebMD Lion’s mane is possibly safe for most people when take appropriately for up to 16 weeks in a row. Side effects might be mild and may include stomach discomfort. However we had no problems using Lion’s mane extract powder for longer periods of time on a daily basis.

Take special precaution when pregnant and breast feeding because there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking Lion’s mane during this time.

Also Lion’s mane might slow down blood clotting. This might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding in people with bleeding conditions. However, there are no reports of this occurring in humans, the studies were done just on mice. For humans this effect may actually have benefits, since it inhibits the production of excessive blood cells, which is usually the main reason for artery thickening. It is also useful for stopping blood clots from forming and thus encouraging your circulatory system to function at optimal levels.

It may also lower your blood sugar levels, so if you have diabetes monitor your blood sugar levels carefully, there are two studies done on mice and rats which show that using Lion’s mane extract lowers blood sugar levels almost by half and also it can increase you natural insulin level.

And the last warning, stop using Lion’s mane up to 2 weeks before your scheduled surgery, because it might cause extra bleeding during and after surgery.
