Cordyceps sinensis, whose correct Latin name is Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Dong Chong Xia Cao) is among the most valued medicinal mushrooms. It is quite different to other fungi in the fact that its preferred substrate is insect. It is usually harvested in very high altitude climate zones, such as the high altitudes of Tibet and Nepal. Unfortunately, due to its medicinal properties, which led to enormous market demand Ophiocordyceps sinensis has been added to the list of endangered species.
Cordyceps strains-DNA similarities
Several species are widely available on the world market and there is usually confusion around them. The CS-4 strain became very popular especially among people that do physical performance. Its DNA analysis shows it is 70-75% identical to the Ophiocordyceps sinensis.
Cordyceps militaris is on the rise of interest. Its DNA analysis shows it is 80-85% identical to Ophiocordyceps sinensis. Hirsutella sinensis is a strain, which has about 95-97% identical to the Ophiocordyceps sinensis. But there is more into it.
Cordyceps militaris vs CS-4
It is useful to know that CS-4 and Hirsutella sinensis are nowadays widely growing via SMF (Submerged fermentation), meaning their substrate is liquid and they cannot produce fruiting bodies.
Cordyceps militaris is cultivating via SSF (Solid State Fermentation), and therefore is control via organic means. In addition when is growing on solid substrate Cordyceps militaris produce fruiting bodies. The fruiting bodies extract is richer in active ingredients. An example is the higher content of beta glucans in the fruiting bodies of the mushroom organism, not in the mycelium.
Cordyceps militaris is our choice
Our organic Cordyceps militaris extract contains substantial levels of beta glucans and cordycepin (3-deoxyadenosine). We choose this particular strain because it produces fruiting bodies, does not need insects for that and moreover is under organic cultivation. As a matter of fact fungi are complex and intelligent organisms. The ability to produce fruiting bodies is a sign that the mushroom organism is mature and strong enough. It concentrates high amounts of protective compounds into “the mushroom”. Of the three species, the life cycle of Cordyceps militaris reflects the life cycle of Ophiocordyceps sinensis, and we believe that this fact if of great importance.
Last but not least-it is the ultimate strain, offering the actives of Ophiocordyceps sinensis and it can supply a world demand for Cordyceps, and it can be grown on grain substrate to produce its potent fruiting bodies.
Health benefits of Cordyceps
Scientific research shows that Cordyceps species have wide range of of benefits to offer. Here are some: immune-modulating, increasing the uptake of oxygen, increase blood circulation, kidney supportive, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor.
Another key point is that in TCM Cordyceps is famous with its ability to improve the Qi flow (the universal living energy). That last one we can confirm about our organic Cordyceps militaris extract on 100%, hence we call it “Qi fuel”.
Mushroom Extracts and Contraindications
One common thing about medicinal mushrooms is that they offer an incredibly wide range of health benefits and usually have no adverse effect. However, just like any other concentrated food product, the experience may vary from one person to another we suggest you monitor yourself. In case you experience an adverse effect – please stop taking the extract. Remember – you know your body better than anyone else and it is your privilege to care for yourself!
